The Meadowhall Extension Plans

Did you know about Meadowhall’s plans to extend?  I know, as if it is not big enough, right?  For example it is already the 11th largest shopping centre in the UK, can you believe that?  And, when this extension goes ahead it will become the 4th.  How incredible is that?

The extension is said to be for a £300m development.  Permission for this was granted in March 2019.  It will be built on the site to the south of the shopping centre.  This is a very exciting time and it is hard to believe this will happen.

Sheffield is already a thriving city and there are so many plans to make it even more so.  I for one cannot wait for this!

What’s the plan

The site used to be steel works, which is what Sheffield was initially famous for!

Not only steel the site also was used for rivet and brass works, brick and tile works and railway.

It is crazy to think that this development will include 1.08 million sq ft of flexible commercial floorspace and 430,000 sq ft of office space.  It is going to be HUGE!

As if that is not enough.  There is also going to be a car showroom and a hotel, wow!.  Not forgetting the much needed retail and leisure space; 50,000 sq ft.

And of course the car parking and also servicing, landscaping, highways and engineering works.

Creation of jobs

4,810 jobs are hoped to be created thanks to the development.  We all know more jobs can lead to more people wanting to relocate to an area.

As a result, this leads to the need of more properties, of course.

Northern Powerhouse

If you don’t know the Northern Powerhouse is a proposal to build economic growth in the North of England.

And, Sheffield is one of the core cities in the Northern Powerhouse and rightly so.  Meadowhall is just one of the things that gives Sheffield a reason for that place as a core city.

Charles Maudsley, the head of retail and leisure for British Land, said:

“Plans for the Leisure Hall will continue Meadowhall’s evolution, creating a place with a bolder, broader and deeper leisure mix.

This will provide a number of benefits to the entire Sheffield City Region and ensure the region plays a central role in the Northern Powerhouse.”

How amazing is this?  Sheffield is definitely on the map, and so it should be.

Meadowhall aiding the Northern Powerhouse

Meadowhall opened 25 years ago.  I, for one, cannot believe its been so long.  It is amazing how it has become that landmark you see when driving on the M1.

As a result it has helped put Sheffield in so many people’s minds.

It was exciting back then and it carries on being exciting.

So many jobs have been created because of Meadowhall.  As well as bringing so many people from other areas to this amazing city.  Resulting in the need for more houses.

Helping the economy

Over time this has been a massive contribution to the economy.  A recent PWC report reveals that, 1p in every £1 in the Sheffield City Region’s economy can be linked back to Meadowhall.  This is massive!  And not before time this is acknowledged.

Chris Grigg, British Land’s Chief Executive, said:

“We are very proud of the contribution Meadowhall has made and will maintain this position as Sheffield grows.  Meadowhall playing a key role in the Council’s exciting plans to ensure the city takes its rightful place at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse.”

James Wharton MP, Minister for the Northern Powerhouse, agreed saying “The Northern Powerhouse is about unlocking the potential of the economies of the North of England and this report confirms the role Meadowhall has played in this, not just to Sheffield, but across the region as a whole.”

This is definitely something we should be proud of, don’t you agree?

Effects on property in Sheffield

There are so many business parks around the Sheffield area.  This includes Sheffield  Business Park, Tinsley Park, Europa Link, The Quadrant and Meadowhall.  Just to name a few!  Together they attract 24 million visitors a year.  All of these companies  generate jobs.  Again, leading to more people coming into the area, which could lead to people renting.  Whether this be long or short term…

Because new jobs are created in an area.  It encourages more people to live there, which increases the demand for properties.  More often than not these will be rental properties, which makes Sheffield a perfect investment city.

Sheffield is continually progressing and there are many more plans for the city’s future developments.  It is very exciting to be part of this amazing and ever progressing city.  What do you think?
